About the Church

Redeemer Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America a denomination committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ; the authority of the Bible; the doctrinal system subordinate to the Word of God expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, and to the carrying out of the Great Commission. The leadership is accountable to Chesapeake Presbytery, of which we are a member.

The gospel is the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ, and is the foundational belief of Redeemer Presbyterian Church and central to all we say, do, and teach. As we understand our own need for the grace of God and salvation in Jesus Christ, we are better able to extend that love and grace in our relationships with others.

God’s Word defines the life and ministry of the people of Redeemer Presbyterian Church. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness (II Timothy 3:16). Scripture is our perfect rule for faith and practice as it is infallible (cannot fail) and inerrant (without error).

In answering some questions of life, we look to Scripture and not to experience, tradition, or reason alone apart from Scripture to answer these questions.

One question is, on what basis will God give me eternal life?  Since we are described as being dead in our sins; we are totally fallen. Our only hope and basis for eternal life can only be in another bringing us to life, for all eternity; who is God Himself, in the person of Jesus, the Son-  the sacrifice and atonement (covering) for the sins of those who trust in Him.

Another question is who and what is God, and what is my purpose in life? If God has given life, then we owe all to Him. The fourth question in the Shorter Catechism done by the Westminster Assembly in London in the 17th century, summarizes Scripture when it states that God is a spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, justice , goodness, and truth. He is one God, in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory with different roles.

Our purpose is to love Him and enjoy a relationship with Him forever with the forgiveness of our sins.

Lastly,  how am I refreshed and renewed? Through the work of the Holy Spirit working through God’s Word, as well as encouraging, convicting, and drawing me to enjoy God and serve one another. As much as we encourage, support and help one another, it is to no lasting value apart form the work of the Holy Spirit.
